Celebrating 40 Years of Family, Faith & Flavor
This month marks 40 incredible years, and I wanted to share how it all began. I couldn’t be prouder of my parents, Mike and Layla, and the legacy they’ve built.
In 1979, they left Lebanon with hope in their hearts and settled in Virginia Beach after a brief stop in Chicago. With help from a dear friend, Mike started washing dishes for $3/hour while Layla rolled grape leaves. Their work ethic was unmatched—and within a few years, they were running local staples like Mary’s, Peabody’s, and Chicho’s Pizza.
In 1985, Mike spotted a “For Lease” sign and turned a dream into reality: Mom’s Kitchen and Scandals was born. Today, it’s a landmark—and just one part of the empire they built, including The Corn Popper, Elegant Limo Service, 3rd Planet Café, and now Krave at the Oceanfront.
Their greatest success, though, is our family. They raised three daughters with love and opportunity, and now their grandson Giovanni is already helping out at the restaurant—eager to carry on the tradition.
Mike and Layla’s story is proof that with faith, hustle, and heart, anything is possible. Here’s to 40 years of family, flavor, and the American Dream.
Here, every dish tells a story of resilience, tradition, and the unshakable bond of family. It’s not just about feeding people; it’s about bringing them together, honoring heritage, and building a legacy one meal at a time.
